MEANING OF THE TITLE Purgatio is a Latin term that means cleansing, purification or purgation. It comes from purgare: to clean, purify or remove what contaminates. In the context of this artwork, the title representsa process of inner purification. It is not only about expelling what oppresses, but about transforming it: extracting the accumulated burden, going through it, and finally releasing it stripped of its destructive power. ABOUT THE WORK Two figures occupy the composition in radically opposed states. The lower figure appears to be in extreme tension, contracted upon itself in an almost convulsive gesture. The body seems unable to contain any longer what it carries within, and expels it through a physical and emotional release. Above it, a second figure remains serene, relaxed and introspective. They are not two separate individuals, but two manifestations of the same self. One embodies the body that suffers and expels; the other, the consciousness capable of receiving what emerges from it without being consumed by its violence. The lower hand of the upper figure descends towards the tensioned body, almost touching it. It gathers that energy and channels it through itself, acting as a filter between the suffering and its liberation. What is born below as a chaotic discharge finds above a different outlet: the raised hand releases it outward after having transformed it. The contrast between the two bodies forms the core of the work: tension and calm, pain and compassion, expulsion and purification coexist within a single individual. Here, catharsis is not simply about emptying oneself, but about being able to process what one carries inside in order to let it go. Purgatio thus represents purification as an inner act of transformation: one part of the individual expels what it can no longer bear, while the other receives it, filters it and finally releases it. It is not the disappearance of pain, but the moment when it ceases to remain trapped inside and begins to lose its power over the one who contains it.
