MEANING OF THE TÍTLE Soma is a term of Greek origin (σῶμα), meaning "body”. In classical tradition, it was used in opposition to psique (ψυχή), the mind or the soul. In the context of this artwork, the title points to the body not only as a container of emotional experience, but also as an instrument of perception and knowledge. What we feel, endure and accumulate within ourselves can reveal a way of understanding reality that goes beyond physical sight. ABOUT THE WORK The body remains relaxed, surrendering to a different form of perception. From the opening in the chest, an eye emerges, as if the individual momentarily stops looking only through external senses and allows their inner self to see for them. This eye does not represent physical vision. It is a gaze that arises from within the individual, built from what they feel, what they have lived and what they carry inside. The hand, perceived by that eye, becomes the object of this perception: it is not merely seen, but recognised froma deeper level of consciousness. The work thus explores the need to look outward from within. Not to understand the world solely through the eyes, but also through the heart, the senses, memory and emotional experience. Where external vision may not find a way out, inner perception can reveal it. The opening of the chest turns the body into a threshold between the inner and outer worlds. The individual does not resist this opening; they surrender to it. They allow what normally remains hidden to take the place of sight and to contemplate reality from another perspective. Soma ultimately represents the ability to see through what we carry within. The body ceases to be merely the place where our emotions dwell and becomes the medium through which those emotions can look outward. An inner gaze capable of transcending despair and, beyond it, recognising the possibility of a way out.
