MEANING OF THE TITLE Pondus is a Latin term that means weight, burden or gravity, and can also refer to balance and stability. In the context of this artwork, the title expresses a paradox: a body that has lost its physical weight while carrying an immense inner burden. The figure rises, but what it carries within remains; the absence of gravity does not equal lightness. ABOUT THE WORK A suspended body occupies the centre of the composition. It does not fall, nor does it rest on any point, and it seems to defy the physical laws that should govern it. Yet its posture is far from serene. The muscles remain tense, the limbs are strained, and the hands open in a gesture filled with intensity. The levitation creates a contradiction between what the body does and what it feels. Outwardly it floats; inwardly it carries weight. The energy that runs through it seems to keep it suspended while at the same time subjecting it to an enormous pressure. The pictorial matter reinforces this tension. Strokes, splatters and drips run across the figure and the surrounding space, making visible what has no form: emotional weight. The body seems trapped within its own release, suspended in a moment where ascent and burden coexist. Pondus represents the weight of what cannot be seen. The figure defies gravity, but cannot free itself from within.
