On the canvas I see a dense forest of birches and spruces, standing like a choir of white columns. On the left, a figure with honey-colored hair in a yellow coat sits, leaning against a rock. The right side is awash in purples and browns, and from the shadow a stag with wide-spreading antlers emerges. Purple petals on the ground shimmer as if someone had spilled paint. The mood is as quiet as a hush and really a bit unsettling. It’s an image of the moment before an encounter. The brush worked thick and heavy, as if in impasto, and the light is guided by chiaroscuro. You can see a scratched texture and a quiver in the planes that suggest a palette knife and layers.
