Between two split trunks, like curtains, a stage unfolds in hues of lavender, honey, and smoky purple. From thick, glossy paint laid on with a palette knife, twisted boughs rise, and in the background sad sunflowers sway like sentries. On a pale, oval clearing, elongated figures of children slip around in a circle, part dance, part escape. Those children run, and I would run there too. The atmosphere is soft yet weird, like a dream after dusk. The impasto forms rough edges and a grainy sheen; the brushstrokes leave seams. The composition is theatrical, framed by the trunks, leading the eye through a tunnel of light toward semi-transparent flowers.
