The painting was created in the impressionist style and captures the essence of Saint Sophia Cathedral. It was painted during the annual Sofia Plein Air-2021, held in the heart of Kyiv. This architectural marvel is a testament to the rich history of Kievan Rus’. The Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv stands as a magnificent 11th-century architectural and artistic masterpiece and it is a world-famous monument that has left an indelible mark on Ukrainian history and culture. The cathedral’s name, “Sophia,” derives from the Greek word “sofia,” meaning “wisdom.” Unlike being dedicated to a specific saint named Sophia, it celebrates the concept of Holy Wisdom. Construction began in 1037 or 1011, and it took two decades to complete. Prince Yaroslav the Wise sponsored its construction to commemorate his decisive victory over the nomadic Pechenegs in 1036, ensuring their subsequent decline as a threat to Kyiv. The cathedral’s dome, rising to an impressive height of 28.6 meters (94 feet), adds to its grandeur. Yaroslav the Wise’s legacy extends beyond construction; he also established the first known library in Kyivan Rus within the cathedral’s precincts. Today, Saint Sophia Cathedral is part of the National Sanctuary “Sophia of Kyiv,” responsible for preserving this historic complex and other landmarks across Ukraine. Despite recent challenges, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the cathedral remains a symbol of resilience and cultural heritage. Exhibited at the Sophia of Kyiv reserve, this artwork has garnered recognition in various competitions, both nationally and internationally.
