Jacek Lipowczan

Artist of January 2011

Jacek Lipowczan
A perfectionist. He paints without hurry. Each movement of his paintbrush guides us, step by step, to the Artist’s “fairy tale world”..., which at a first glance makes us laugh but after a while we notice all deeply hidden human weaknesses. The fortress of Jacek Lipowczan’s Creativity is based on a very solid foundation: on detail. All the individual fragments constitute the rhythm of each story told by the Artist’s paintings and they surprise us with the multiplicity of meanings. Oscillating between realism and fantasy, they seem not to know the boarders of time and space.

Encounters / Lucia Sommavilla /

Painting of January 2011

Lucia Sommavilla
They’re walking, and their Love’s walking along. They are not looking for recognition... Just going, announcing their happiness with kisses. In the middle of the day, in the middle of the crowd, in the crowded street... Let the people look! No matter where, no matter when. Together.

Just give up, and a delicate hand of an Artist will guide you into the border of the woods. And this is the place, near the Wuthering Heights, where you can become this little dreaming girl one more time...

Painting of March 2010

Beata Talecka

Monika Winnicka

Artist of February 2010

Monika Winnicka
The Artist paints the objects that are commonly believed to build a woman’s image: a pink wrap, a colorful swim-suit, flip-flops… All these items are associated with boudoir, the body, sexuality.

Elusiveness / Renata Brzozowska /

Painting of February 2010

Renata Brzozowska
A very short moment when who you are is coherent with what you feel. A gift of enlightenment, an inspired moment, frozen time… is it going to last – or is it just an elusiveness...?

Daniel Krysta

Artist of January 2010

Daniel Krysta
Threading your way through clichés and abandoning the blind fondness of the art you meet everywhere, you will find how many thrills may be evoked by objects, which at a glance, don’t catch your attention. Daniel Krysta breaks the stereotypes and in his painting proves that even Loudspeakers may become a certain object of contemplation; what these unique Works convey could be called precise. The artist combines techniques and plays with planes thus achieving a real masterpiece on a particular theme. Modern Art exceeds the classical notion of beauty... However it does not forsake beaut

Thistles III / Henryk Radziszewski /

Painting of January 2010

Henryk Radziszewski
"Works of nature are always like God’s uttered words." An artist then is a Bearer of Good News who on canvas shows us fragments of Ideal Being...

Mariusz Czajkowski

Artist of December 2009

Mariusz Czajkowski
It is Him who introduces us to the World of whirling colours and symbols. Thank to him we could be acquainted with still unpopular Art of Aborigines. “Every piece of art created by an aborigine conveys a hidden message”. So every painting of Mariusz Czajkowski contains much more than figures and shapes composed of little dots. Entering this colourful space we are surrounded by wild nature and uncontrollable flora and fauna... But this is not all, with his brushstrokes our aborigine can take you to the exotic sphere of tradition and dreams...

A dream / Paulina Wilk /

Painting of December 2009

Paulina Wilk
Female subtlety depicted in The Dream shows a delicate, sensual, defenceless and graceful creature. She is surrounded by the magic of endless night... magic of the diverse world, which wishes to give us the key to its secret gate, as if to a magic gate transferring to unknown places...The innocence of the Woman in The Dream beguiles... Despite of its dark colours The Painting doesn’t evoke sadness. It should provoke quiet thoughts... tender musing... The Woman in the Dream is a beautiful creature, is she not? The Woman is endowed with a certain role by reality. Businesswomen and femmes fatales everybody knows are a mere illusion... The Dream will uncover Their mask and reveal Their True Identity! It will turn the hardest shell into diamond tulle... And it all happens when the Woman is Dreaming...

Grzegorz Ptak

Artist of November 2009

Grzegorz Ptak
Beautiful Angels with their tiny, delicate fingers, touching the most tender part of our hearts. Lovely, but a little sad dwarfs. Graceful Parisiennes holding their men with love… These are all the charms of Grzegorz Ptak. This Magician puts a spell with his paintbrush, and spreads peace and joy in our hearts. We learn to see all those little beauties: little unlaced shoe, a white balloon, a tiny elephant waiting for a gulp of delicious tea… this is the charm and grace of the paintings by Grzegorz Ptak. They dissolve our everyday worries and fears. They cuddle our palpitating hearts, put our aching heads to warm pillows, and let us close our eyes and slowly sail away into the world that smell the cinnamon apple cookies …

Non omnis moriar I / Małgorzata Niegel /

Painting of November 2009

Małgorzata Niegel
Wind always brings some changes. Its blowing makes your nostrils grow wider, and looking for the scent of freedom… Freedom of dying, passing away, getting back to pure form – getting rid of all your comfortable habits. Death means turning to freedom. This is our ultimate sacrifice for the new generations, who have no other way than to… sacrifice themselves one day. But we won’t die entirely. Our eternally divisible part will lazily maunder among the generations. This primeval impulse of death will leave us some hope… some hope for Non omnis moriar...

Renata Brzozowska

Artist of October 2009

Renata Brzozowska
Renata Brzozowska is a restless choreographer, always striving to create a perfect sequence of her dancing painting brush, and the movement, frozen in her canvas. Full of dynamism structures appear on her paintings as a result of her master, wide strokes, and courageously selected colors. The main characters of her paintings are the expressive, self-secure figures: proud and free women, at the peak of their lifetimes. In love with life, devoted to their passions, fully experiencing everything that appears on their ways. Sometimes they are sad – truly sad, going through what they didn’t manage to change… This is the painting of emotions. Dancing figures come into being from the colorful whirls: dance of the body and soul, of the beauty and… just… Renata Brzozowska.

Cuban children / Mariusz Szymański /

Painting of October 2009

Mariusz Szymański
Look at the Cuban children! They’re so joyful and carefree! So true in their spontaneity and, in the contrary to the whole world, FREE! Cleanness of the river, and its dangerous bottom… how much difference does it make?! FREEDOM! The moment that lasts forever: just a pure joy of being free! A crazy jump into the changeable river, and the uncertainty of the current… FREEDOM! Are you able to hear their screaming and calling, mixing with the sound of the rushing water? Will you ever be free like this again? Not sure…? The Cuban Children just ARE!

Elżbieta Giza

Artist of August 2009

Elżbieta Giza
People used to think that the Earth is the center of everything. They also used to think that you can’t see the music. In her paintings, Elzbieta Giza denied both thesis. The center of everything is… Love – and that’s for sure! And you can paint the music, and hear it with your eyes. From delicate sopranos, through brave altos, to powerful basses – you will sense all this in the paintings by Elzbieta Giza! However, music doesn’t exist without Love. Without Love, it can only be an ordinary twanging… Love is so deeply perceptible in the paintings by the Artist. And it is Love that creates all the painted sounds, full of harmony, soothing, bringing peace… and hope. When lovers are close to each other, music is everywhere! And when Elzbieta Giza touches the canvas with her brush, the world full of overtures simply explodes! It has always been like this, and it will be like this till the end of time…

The Most Beautiful of All the River Nymphs / Jarosław Miklasiewicz /

Painting of August 2009

Jarosław Miklasiewicz
The movie star came back to her village. To the place of her carefree childhood and now, once again, just like ages ago, she managed to charm everyone, including the village representative! During the annual election of the most beautiful of all the river nymphs – she won the first place! She didn’t bother that the river wasn’t too clean… she got used to all those little dirts. The glory and splendor have always been more important for her, than the way she gained them. Apart from the sunglasses hiding her sad eyes, her dark secrets knows also her eternal companion: Faun, who follows her like a shadow. He is strong, and hides in the sack everything his Lady would like to forget. But Fauns are changeable, you know…, and if the sack will be opened one day, our miss won’t be able to collect all her hidden past. But for now: Viva the Most Beautiful of All the River Nymphs!

Krzysztof Łozowski

Artist of July 2009

Krzysztof Łozowski
Krzysztof Lozowski is a real master of the world of the adults’ fairytales. Laughing and full of desire figures from his paintings are just emanating with curiosity. Naked, rejecting their fear women are encouraging to haggling in the market of their bodies. Dwarfs, clowns and jugglers are joyfully participating in the show. Smiling admires of this spectacle of life are searching for a part that is missing him for happiness: a female element. Sometimes to get what everybody’s counting for, they need to put a mask of a jester, to become a cupid, or numb Pinocchio, the wicked plans of whom are only revealed by his growing nose. Well, this is only a small reflection of the observer, while in the circus of life the party lasts…

Commentary / Wojciech Marek Szczęśniak /

Painting of July 2009

Wojciech Marek Szczęśniak
A wide smile announcing only bad news. An elegantly served portrait of ourselves, standing on the edge of the precipice of illusion. A TV show with the accidental actors, wanting to maximally use their 3 seconds of glory on the black screen. This is this wonderfully captured by Wojciech Marek Szczesniak truth, a balance of our needs and expectations, presented by the ideally fitted speaker. There are next 100 of screens in the background, the next hundreds of news so bad that we might perhaps feel lucky for a while. And what if not? What if the camera is going to visit also us one day? Oh…! It’s better not to think about it, it’s better to change the channel…

Sara Jaśkiewicz

Artist of June 2009

Sara Jaśkiewicz
Why not? Every pot has two handles, and everything has its reflection in the other side of the mirror. But in the paintings by Sara Jaskiewicz it’s really difficult to decide which side is the good one? Do we feel fulfilled looking at Sara’s paintings – or is it the contrary, that we discover our darker side, full of allusions? Figures from the paintings ask us all the same question: did we choose to be in agreement with our true nature, or did we just agree to be? Let the acrylic, rainbow-like colors whisper us the solution that we are already carrying within us, anyway…

Crossing the Strait of Winds / Jarosław Jaśnikowski /

Painting of June 2009

Jarosław Jaśnikowski
A lonely ship silently struggling through the misty mountains in the glare of the morning sun. Her target harbor remains unknown… This is the cruise without a crew. The ship creates a cathedral which lives and grows thanks to her power, and takes her strength away! Once upon a time it was a woman: free, independent, with a passion of life. Today it’s only a majestic, sky-high cathedral, silently gliding through the Strait of Winds.

Beata Pflanz

Artist of May 2009

Beata Pflanz
The single atoms change into planets in the winkling of the eye in the microcosm of Beata Pflanz. We, the observers of the Artist’s world, are unknowingly joining their dance. We are becoming a part of the infinite number of the solar systems… and these cloudy ones! The following canvas, and the following galaxies of the inner world of the Artist, are the micro- and the macrocosms at the same time. Alternation of the scale makes us change the perspective as well… pulsing between the worlds. Where shall we stop? What is our true home: the dancing planets, or the scattered grains of sand? Does an astronomer with a telescope see more than a biologist with a microscope? And what do you see?

Nobody I / Joanna Stożek /

Painting of May 2009

Joanna Stożek
Isn’t a „nobody” - “somebody”, more than anybody else? Seemingly separated from the world, sadly peeping out of the curtain “nobody” from Joanna Stozek’s painting contains our biggest fear: the fear that we are all the same, and that passing, we are passing irrevocably, and… leaving nothing behind: so homogeneous, in the homogeneous space; homo sapiens, homo sovieticus, homo homini… a wolf, or a brother? A sister? A mirror? A pane? Is this possible that looking “at” you’re looking “through”?

Tomas Mayer

Artist of April 2009

Tomas Mayer
Is it possible to tear through the uncompromising nature of numbers? Will you even try? The challenge made by Tomas Mayer is a try of ordering the numbers, and leaving them in harmony with their unlimited nature at the same time. The mind of a careful observer, looking for symbols, metaphors, and meanings, may be scared by the multiplicity of potential combinations. It’s not possible to look at the Artist’s paintings without looking for meanings and for rational solutions. But isn’t it insane to search for the pattern that would unify the whole ocean of potentials? Does the Pi number ever end? And if so, what’s there, in its end? If we find a ‘hidden’ meaning, will we remind peaceful, believing that this is the only and the best interpretation? Will you find your lucky combination among the endless digits? Will you even try…? Will you even try...?

Mothbound II / Krzysztof Kiwerski /

Painting of April 2009

Krzysztof Kiwerski
This is a moment of change. A fear lighten up by your attention, loses its authority. A chitin armor suddenly softens, and all moving members lay defenselessly down, like a child cuddled to sleep. Delicate, woken up in the middle of being not-themselves women feel the urge to look into the darkest corners of their minds. Their fright, that fear will be unbearable, suddenly changes into a sense of the infinite harmony… Is it now…? So it was just enough to look...

Iwona Zawadzka

Artist of March 2009

Iwona Zawadzka
The paintings by Iwona Zawadzka show the world of modern women: active, full of life and vigorous, and… free. A dynamism of their figures has its roots in the return to nature. A modern woman, living in a big city, after work secretly dives into herself, sneaking, looking for redemption from the pure physicality… That’s where she takes her power from; that’s what makes her free to go the path that has a heart…

Idyll / Anna Masiul Gozdecka /

Painting of March 2009

Anna Masiul Gozdecka
Four heralds of spring walking in the juicy, fresh greenness. Do you remember the smell of spring? Do you remember that a stork is a symbol of good luck? Do you remember that green is the color of hope? Four storks, four-leaf clover, four sites of the world – it’s all yours! Get up and run! Spring is here!

Paweł Garwol

Artist of February 2009

Paweł Garwol
The world so close to each of us, seen by the careful observer, the perspicacity and impartial attention of whom embarrasses the most enlightened minds. The space of ego depicted in the paintings by Pawel Garwol doesn’t care for favor of the audience. It stimulates to searching for symbolism and looking for something own, primordial by the very fact of its existence. What causes anxiety, is – at the same time – something that motivates us, and lets us chase our desires. A denied fear of a child, and not entirely embraced by consciousness image of reality – all this changes in the metaphors, the understanding of which lets us fully live…

In the space of feminity / Ewelina Wrona /

Painting of February 2009

Ewelina Wrona
Blue and white – it’s an ideal match, the changeability of which has always been admired. To see their mutual interpenetration you have to look up, into the sky. Being in a state of pure harmony, we can consciously choose to come back, or – to become a unity, and to melt away in blue… In the space of femininity, an attempt to know a complicated female nature gains power, becomes the essence of our times, defines generations, and the borders between art and life melt away…

Julita Malinowska

Artist of January 2009

Julita Malinowska
Heavenly beaches, boundless freedom, pure like a sand joy from being unity – this is a part of the story told by Julita Malinowska with her paintbrush. Seemingly simple paintings with their uncomplicated structure contain loads of what can only be seen with our Souls. There is love, the absence of artificial borders, and nudity – not only physical. Apart from the body, the Artist uncovers also our limitations. Are carefree playing children safe? Where are their parents? Is this beach really safe…? Is asking these questions while looking at Julita Malinowska’s paintings still sensible? And perhaps our inner child would ask: What would you do if you were not afraid? Will you run with me along the beach…?

White / Piotr Pilawa /

Painting of January 2009

Piotr Pilawa
Piotr Pilawa has understood cat’s nature for sure. You can recognize a true feline character in his painting; the character as soft as cat’s paws... An old yard, a scraped wall, some remains of an old paint, and a majestic cat, living between two worlds. The Artist depicts it in the brightness of truth. We are just watching the cat that in some magical way can recognize our emotions, our impulses, and weaknesses. His half-asleep body only seems to be a furry ball of warmth. In reality, this white cat with a black tail has a power to be independent and true. Under his clean, passionately ordered fur lies a conscious and harmonious mind, and an agile body, ready to care for being faithful to itself. The cat is the only friend who comes when the others are going to leave… And his faithfulness is clearly visible in the paintings by Piotr Pilawa…

Krzysztof Iwin

Artist of December 2008

Krzysztof Iwin
Paintings by Krzysztof Iwin are like caricatures of our dark side. Figures thanks to which the Artist puts us, the observers, in embarrassment, are all reflections of ourselves – ourselves without masks, without joyful smiles stick to our faces by the social “keep smiling”. The world of dreams, in which we can fully BE ourselves, not bothering about what is, and what is not allowed… Be ourselves in the happiest of ways, to express our nature, which never shall be judged, and for which we shall never feel guilty. Paintings by Krzysztof Iwin remind us of being in truth with ourselves, of experiencing ourselves in fullness, to which we are created...

Bracka Street / Jerzy Boberski /

Painting of December 2008

Jerzy Boberski
A picture from Warsaw. Bracka street, 13 a.m., an April afternoon. A queue of cars, lazily driving through the traffic jam in the center of the city. Strangers walking by the pavements. And greenness around – the greenness of the plates in office buildings, of car bodies, and a raw of optimistic green lights. In this rush the only conscious thing is… the rain, which – accordingly with its guidelines – rains straight into the Bracka street in Warsaw…

Jarosław Jaśnikowski

Artist of November 2008

Jarosław Jaśnikowski
Follow me! It’s an invitation to a crack between dimensions. Jaroslaw Jasnikowski discovered an invisible pass into a parallel world – this is for sure. To a place where his visions – visions like from dreams – materialize. People mix up with the monumental statues and machines, to make them human... But this world is not for all – the entrance is guarded by the rational mind. Will you agree to disobey it? Will you follow me…?

Oil on canvas / Kamila Szadaj /

Painting of November 2008

Kamila Szadaj
A glare a square uncertain of its’ borders. Creative explosion, after which the order reappears, becoming into being on the shreds of a torn solid. Glow of a new thought, breaking the fence of a little house on the beach, getting inside a cozy inside and into the dreams of the inhabitants, immersed in siesta, without an excuse. And around all this… only whiteness, innocence and awaiting for the wind… and maybe it’s just a little oil paint on the canvas

Małgorzata Kruk

Artist of October 2008

Małgorzata Kruk
Malgorzata Kruk remains faithful to the beauty of nature. Peace… Undisturbed flow of life and its charm in the purest, immaculate form – these are the main trump cards of her paintings. The meadows of the Artist, so rich in variety, gently touched by the sunrays, smelling with the wind and freedom. Their grace cannot remain unnoticed...

Market sunday in Cracow XIX century / Ryszard Tyszkiewicz /

Painting of October 2008

Ryszard Tyszkiewicz
XIX century in Krakow. A marketplace full of life and movement. In a moody Saturday morning flower-girls are preparing colorful armfuls of flowers. Gentlemen in bowler hats are eagerly buying some bits of a subtle beauty for their ladies. Carriages are coming and going, carrying the bachelors for invited breakfasts… - and the flowers are vanishing...

Krzysztof Kiwerski

Artist of September 2008

Krzysztof Kiwerski
Krzysztof Kiwerski creates beyond time. Only the fascination with a Man is common for all his paintings - infiltrating surfaces of events. A Man in his/her fatal unconsciousness, totally “mothbound”, is not able to see the Truth. Mothers leaning over their babies in a dimmed light of the XV century candles have no idea who the babies are going to become; passengers of a train don’t know where their journey is going to end. The paintings remind us of staying self-aware, consciously choosing our paths, remembering about a reason-consequence, deciding about our lives…

Into the fire / Włodzimierz Kukliński /

Painting of September 2008

Włodzimierz Kukliński
DESPONDENCY! Rejection, loneliness, a feeling of being forgotten by God himself… We find ourselves in non-existence, with our souls torn apart, and the wings of our old dreams - clipped. Will we be able to soar again? To fly once more… and loose ourselves in a pure joy of existence? YES! We are Angels with colorful wings! We can fly! All we have to do is believe, one more time… and fly straight into the fire of life…

Dariusz Twardoch

Artist of August 2008

Dariusz Twardoch
The paintings by Dariusz Twardoch take us, the adults, charmed into the wooden little creatures, into the land of free and joyful childhood. The place where fantasy and unconcern contrasts with so often ligneous picture of ourselves. The creatures seem so thoughtful and a little distant from the scenery, and it’s not by accident... They are us, the adults, still dreaming that the lightness of childhood will come back to us – just for a while – straight from the meadows depicted in the paintings by Dariusz Twardoch...

The secret angel / Grzegorz Ptak /

Painting of August 2008

Grzegorz Ptak
Angels are everywhere. To see them, just… close your eyes, and look with your heart. Once you do it, you’ll se their little troubled faces, worrying about every single step we take. And when we fall asleep, they also jump under their little quilts, just to drink their favorite cinnamon tea, and forget about their worries, just for a while…

Tomasz Pietrzyk

Artist of July 2008

Tomasz Pietrzyk
Tomasz Pietrzyk with his disciplined line guides us through a totally undisciplined world: the world of Freaks, lazily astonished with themselves; and the world of the fairylike towns climbing up the sky… This amazing ‘Steward’ opens the gate to the land of dreams, fantasy, trustfulness and a childish delight. Perhaps amongst the Freaky Little Creatures we’ll find ourselves…?

Big Blue / Marek Langowski /

Painting of July 2008

Marek Langowski
Fever of the July sky, hot and waving air, waiting for a little blow – in vain. Coolness of a soothing morning far from the land, water drops penetrating the air, the wind kissing the wave… the sea and the Big Blue. Everyday life portrayed in the colorful mandalas, and the simplest shapes telling the mystique story to which we, the lurking observers, are allowed to enter only for a moment. And then… it is the moment that enters us, growing endlessly on the jib of imagination. And that are the Paintings by Bartosz Frączek that measure the priceless time of our journeys through the edge between two worlds: Between the canvas and your everyday life.

TOA: Dear Eryk, you’ve recently declared: “God is a Woman”. Can you tell us more about your meetings with the… Goddess? EM: I’m wondering, and in the process of wondering, you always create yourself again. Chaos doesn’t equal disaster. Chaos is the very beginning, an essential factor conditioning progress. I sometimes stack with my painting, not being able to go on, and then I just… make a couple of fast paintbrush movements, destroying the present, just to feel a bracing tingle of overflowing possibilities. And that’s vital. I’m able to start over again, and quickly reach a clear blurs configuration. Certain radicalism of decision is usually god for a painting, though it’s not a rule. You should always break rules, as soon as you know them well enough. It’s the best to make a new beginning, even to create a new world, or a new universe. I’m just wondering and not willing to convince anyone to anything. Besides you don’t treasure once gained harmony for too long, as it soon becomes unimportant and forgotten… This is why Picasso didn’t care about his paintings when they were about to be destroyed. They were of no vale for him, as they’d already been painted. Only an unfinished painting moves you, wakes emotion up. Yes, I saw God. For me God is a woman, but it’s still He, God, not a Goddess. How did he look like? I was standing by the church, and suddenly looking up I clearly saw a great woman’s face, something like a sphinx, with her eyes open, waving hair, as if dispersed to her back. Eyes were grey-blue, bigger than me and wide open. God SHE was looking at the distance. Wasn’t looking at me, for my own good, I think, and I had difficulty looking at him HER, because I had my eyes wet. I’m sure you know it – you’re standing in the church, tears are falling, blurring your vision. I was trying not to close my eyes, and I heard some kind of noise and felt an infiltration, penetration of my whole being. Yes, my imagination sometimes plays tricks on me, but this time I really saw it very clearly. TOA: We know you often paint influenced by emotion, inspired by music. The precious fruit of your dialogue with canvas is a theory of HALOIMPRESSIONISM. Could you explain it to us? EM: Strength of feelings and imagination are both vital in painting. My best paintings came into being thanks to music, which intensify feelings. You have to attune your general course with a momentary feeling, and music – unique, and ideal for the time of painting. Haloimpressionism is a way of painter’s view, based on observation of nature. HALOIMPRESSIONISM THEORY (by Eryk Maler, 1987): on an eye of a painter the area having a color and a value influences neighboring area, changing it in an important way. Transformation goes in a contrary direction, taking into account the hue temperature and a value, i.e. a lighten detail is haloed by contrasting to it border (halo), and the following haloes repeat regularly and expire gradually as the distance from the detail grows. The best painters in the best periods of their lives are able to notice not only the contrasting in value and temperature haloes placed next to an object, but also haloes between the object (or a detail) and the painter’s eye. This phenomena is valid for both the real space and the pictorial one. Of course, the theory cannot be applied arbitrarily, but it’s important for painters to understand it and apply it casually, to gain a certain artistic effect. The theory of haloimpressionism often serves the continuation of impressionism, and this is where its name – haloimpressionism – comes from. TOA: And the last question: if the Universe is an answer…, what’s a question? EM: Yes, it’s an interesting question and I think that here, as it often goes in puzzles and riddles, the answer is already contained in a question. The question is not: WHAT, but: HOW. It’s not important who or what we are, but how we are. We have a thesis in halo: change your disadvantages into your greatest advantages, wait for a while, and the change will occur! Operating with his paintbrush like with a machete, Eryk Maler opens himself a way in the jungle of ideas. Maler creates his own, unique style, but he doesn’t bound to it. The machete tickles like a feather, and the way is winding – you never know what’s there behind the bend. We are always waiting to see the next scenes – the next paintings by Eryk Maler.Operating with his paintbrush like with a machete, Eryk Maler opens himself a way in the jungle of ideas. Maler creates his own, unique style, but he doesn’t bound to it. The machete tickles like a feather, and the way is winding – you never know what’s there behind the bend. We are always waiting to see the next scenes – the next paintings by Eryk Maler. Let us introduce you with the Artist. We asked him some questions. So have a sit, and let’s begin! This time the Touch of Art is the Touch of the Feather. TOA: When and how has your adventure with Art started? Did your parents encourage you to paint? EM: No, my father painted, played, sang, took photos and lived a life in harmony with nature, on the village. He was a farmer and an orchard-keeper, who grew animals, invented some machines, was a locksmith, a carpenter, a hunter, and so one, and so forth… Very inspiring. But the most significant and decisive moment for me was that second in which I could squeeze the tube with oil paint and… smell it. That was enough. This moment on the attic, where we had a workshop, was the beginning. At the time I didn’t expect, and nobody did, that at the age of 18 I was going to paint my first good picture – automatically. Even my father didn’t want to believe it was ME who painted it. He kept repeating: “That’s impossible… impossible!” It makes me smile even today... At that time I’ve started learning about the art of painting, and kept repeating like a mantra: “glaze” and ,,alla prima”:) TOA: Can you tell us about your evolution in a creative process? EM: Well, a thick book wouldn’t be enough to describe it! I’m doing my evolution all the time. Yes, I’m 48 and the process is in progress, and… let it last! I enjoy talking about the evolution in painting in general, and looking for a sense, a point. And I think polish expressionism makes sense for me. I’ve deeply studied all the available materials about painting theories, so I hope we’ll come back to the subject one day. I am not talking about painting only when I’m… painting actually (laughter). TOA: Do you have a Master, an Authority, someone who influenced you, was a sign on your artistic way? EM: Oh, yes. However, I wasn’t able to meet them: Diego Velasques da Silva, Piotr Michalowski, and at present it’s a little girl, Marla Olmstead! TOA: Do you generally recognize authorities, also in different spheres of life? EM: Of course! It only bothers me when great authorities periodically die, as it had been in Poland, just before our polish Pope, Karol Wojtyla, brought them back. John Paul the II was a great Artist, the man of open mind and open heart. He luckily noticed the death of all previously recognized authorities and values. I think, and I hope, they have all been re-established by now. TOA: Some of your paintings present brave nudes, with an open and brave vagina. Is actually woman in the center of your interest? Were you influenced by literature, for example by Eve Ensler? EM: Well, literature doesn’t interfere, doesn’t inspire me in this field. I feel I haven’t painted a really “open” vagina yet, but perhaps you’ll provoke me? But… perhaps it’s just a legend or an abstract? (laughter). My provoking nudes are just a protest against dishonesty and limitations forced on us, supposedly free people, as a muzzle: “this and that is right, that and this is wrong”… and, hey, you, an Adult! Be obedient! Otherwise we’ll throw you out the of the society! I recognize and congratulate such artists as Dotora Nieznalska. In this intolerant society I had to solidarize with, and protect, homosexuals many times. TOA: Where do you get the ideas for paintings from? Can you tell us more about the creation process? EM: Attention please: I paint my best works in a kind of trance, evoked by the certain music. It’s a long trained effect. I am able to train for a long time, as an ex karate-fighter. TOA: What is your overall dream and the purpose of life? EM: It’s very important for me to be able to BE myself, and not to punish myself for that. This is why I made my biggest weaknesses and imperfections – my greatest advantages! This is something we all should try! This is what Van Gogh and Nikifor did, and I want it, too. Besides, I like the sun, free nudity, happy small children, and brave, beautiful teenagers, as well as ladies of classic, full body shapes. And please, don’t be afraid! I’m not a deviant, I’m a… nudist. When I was 18 I went to the nudist’s beach. It was quite cloudy, no sun, only strong, cold wind. I had an opportunity to see that amongst the nudists there are people of brave and honest opinions, cheerful people who want to take off not only their clothes, but also the crust of lies and false stereotypes. Please, ask me more – I’ve just started warming up! (laughter). As for now, I just want to add one thing: God is a woman!
